Neigh­bour’s clue led to body of mur­dered au­thor

A YOUNG neigh­bour of cesspit mur­der vic­tim He­len Bai­ley gave po­lice a vi­tal clue that lo­cated her body, writes Ed Gleave.

The chil­dren’s writer, 51, had been miss­ing for three months, de­spite a huge search. She had in fact been killed by part­ner Ian Ste­wart, who stole her money.

Po­lice had al­most given up hope of find­ing her when neigh­bour Mavis Drake’s daugh­ter spoke to of­fi­cers search­ing Ms Bai­ley’s home in Roys­ton, Hert­ford­shire.

Mavis said: “It was my daugh­ter that ac­tu­ally said ‘You know about the well?’ And within two hours, they had found her.”

Ste­wart was found guilty of mur­der in 2017 and jailed for 24 years.
