Channel Zero 10pm, 5 Star

Sunday Herald Life - - TELEVISION & RADIO -

W ITH the exception of Strictly’s fancy dress extravaganza, British TV has seriously dropped the ball when it comes to marking Hallowe’en. Looking at the listings, you’d hardly know this was supposed to be the spookiest night of the year. I mean, not even a Christopher Lee movie lurking around midnight. Look hard, though, and there are a couple of monsters out there. 5 Star’s American import Channel Zero is an American Horror Story-style anthology, with a new story every series. This time it’s “No End House”, a spin on the haunted mansion format, in which four friends enter a supposedly spooky house, only to find each room more hideously disturbing than the last…and no way out. Elsewhere, BBC Four is dusting off MR James: A View From A Hill (10.30pm), the 2005 adaptation of James’s 1925 tale about the ghastly visions Dr Fanshaw (Mark Letheren) spies through his binoculars while walking the aptly-named Gallows Hill. Not a patch on the Beeb’s spare 1970s James adaptations, but better than nothing.
