Marti We are still top of the Brits

- Chris Sweeney

Marti Pellow has congratulated rap star Drake on equalling his band Wet Wet Wet’s 15-week spell at No1.

But the Clydebank singer also reminded everyone that they still hold the record for the best- performing chart-topper ever made by a British act.

Drake’s One Dance tied level on Friday with Love Is All Around, which was released by Wet Wet Wet in 1994 and featured in the smash- hit movie Four Weddings And A Funeral.

Bryan Adams still leads on 16 weeks with (Everything I Do) I Do It For You.

Marti, 51, said: “It’s a tough feat for anyone to remain at No1 for one week, let alone 15, so credit where it’s due. Drake is now in great company.

“Just remember that, with Drake and Bryan Adams being Canadian, we still hold the record for a British band for now.”

The vast majority of Drake’s success has come from streaming. And 100 streams counts as one copy bought , under current chart rules.

Love Is Al l Around sold 1,001,228 physical copies.

Marti added: “The way music is consumed today is very different to 20- odd years ago so it’s difficult to equate the two records.

“But congratulations to Drake and his team for a job well done.”

Wet Wet Wet would have stayed at No1 longer if they had not ordered record shops to stop stocking the song, preventing the public from buying any more copies.
