Johnston and Weld lead the way to profit

-

Never mind horses for courses. This week is all about men with horses for courses. Those men are Mark Johnston and Dermot Weld.

Sometimes as a punter, things are so obvious that you miss them. When it comes to Glorious Goodwood and Galway, Johnston and Weld are the men to be with.

Listen, there is nothing scientific in this approach as this pair have run those two big meetings for donkey’s years.

And, while you know it’s never that simple and all good things must come to an end at some point, it is surely madness to desert the two of them until the cash stops flowing.

Johnston’s record in Sussex is stunning. Since 2000, the Scot has been leading trainer at the Goodwood meeting on nine occasions.

If you stuck a pound on all of his runners during this period you would be over £ 76 up. In ten of those seasons, you’d have made a profit.

Johnston has enjoyed amazing success in big races down there and you can be sure he’ll collect a trophy at some point.

The same goes for Weld at Galway. His record at this racing and bevvy spectacular puts Messers Mullins, Elliott and O’Brien in the shade.

If you think Johnston has a good record at Goodwood, it’s nothing compared to this.

In the past 30 years, Weld has been the top trainer 29 times and the reason for this is simple as he picks his finest youngsters and fires them out at Galway.

Grey Swallow, Windsor Park, Rite of Passage, the list is almost endless.

Sure, there will be horses entered by these two this week who will be priced up wrong.

Johnston and Weld will, on their deserved reputations and those previous figures, have horses which go off shorter than their bare form would suggest that they should do.

As a punter, that’s a tough thing to accept. It’s hard bringing yourself to back something at 4-1 when you know fine well in your own head it should be a 6-1 chance.

But I learned a long time ago that trying to be too clever in this game is a ticket to Skint Central.

At the end of the day, a 4-1 winner is better than backing a binger. Over the next few days Johnston and Weld are the men to provide you with one.
