Billy Muir, Orkney
If you think you’re busy, spare a thought for multi-tasking pensioner Billy Muir.
He is holding down 14 jobs at the age of 67.
The grandfather-of-three is a jack of all trades who for 50 years has been credited with helping to keep his island community’s economy afloat.
Not only is Billy a firefighter, shepherd, lighthouse keeper and airport worker on North Ronaldsay – the northernmost of Orkney’s islands – he is also chair of the community council, gift shop manager and tour guide, to name a few.
Yet the OAP, who was born on the island, insists he feels privileged to live the life he does.
He said: “I love my community and it’s not just me who works hard. Every one of the 50 residents also plays their part.”
When he is not manning the radio and helping unload planes at North Ronaldsay airport, Billy is on stand-by as an aviation firefighter.
He is also a retained firefighter, tasked with tackling any fires at homes, farms and businesses.
Billy has been working as a lighthouse keeper for the last 47 years and was chair of the North Ronaldsay Trust when they raised £1.2million to renovate the lighthouse outbuildings.
He also takes bookings for rented cottages on the island, is a taxi driver for tourists and tends to his flock of rare breed sheep.
