Rangers edge out Coasters

-

Cove Rangers needed a late double to see off a spirited Lossiemouth side in the Highland League Cup.

Ross Archibald levelled midway through the first half after Paul McManus had put the Wee Gers ahead in the opening-round clash.

The hosts regained their lead in the 28th minute through Mike Megginson but Lossie were deservedly level again nine minutes after the restart. Chris Ross’ towering header made it 2-2 but two late errors proved costly for his team.

Megginson intercepted an attempted clearance and set up McManus before the striker waltzed past several defenders for his second.

Jubilant Cove boss John Sheran admitted: “Lossie were hard- working and well-organised. We showed them the right respect as we knew they had beaten Brora Rangers recently.”

New Coasters gaf fer Bobby Beckwith said: “We more than matched them for 85 minutes.”

Cove’s reward is a quarterf inal trip away to Forres Mechanics who came from 4-1 down to draw at Buckie Thistle and took the tie 4-2 on penalties.

Forres lost Martin Groat to a sending off in the first half while Buckie’s Lewis Mackinnon and keeper Daniel Bell also saw red.

Elsewhere, holders Brora Rangers hammered eight goals past Inverurie Locos with Zander Sutherland bagging his 100th club goal.

Huntly knocked out Fraserburgh 2- 1 whi le Cammy Bowden’s goal for Turriff saw off Wick 1- 0.
