£1m Tomahawks come from Glenrothes
The Tomahawk cruise missiles US presidentt Donald Trump used to devastate a Syrian air basease were made by an arms firm located in Scotland.
The 59 guided missiles were fired i n response to Syr ian dictator Bashar al- Assad launching a nerve gas attack on his own people on Tuesday. And we can reveal that the £1million weapons used in Friday’s retaliation are made by Raytheon, the fifth-largest arms firm in the world.
Last year, the Sunday Mail exposed links between Raytheon – who make components for smart bombs in Glenrothes, Fife – and alleged war crimes in Yemen. It was announced in December that Raytheon had won a £ 242million contract to provide 214 Tomahawk missiles to the US and UK from Glenrothes and other plants.
Yesterday, tensions over Syria escalated as Boris Johnson cancelled a visit to Moscow.
And there was fresh bombing of Khan Sheikhoun, the town where Assad launched his toxic chemical attack.
The latest assault by fighter jets killed one woman and injured three others.
One resident said: “It is like Assad is trying to kill everyone that survived the chemical attack.”
Heart-wrenching pictures taken in the aftermath of the gas attack show rubble littering bombed- out homes. Nearby, women and children are seen writhing and foaming at the mouth.
Johnson had been due to make the first official visit to the Russian capital by a British Foreign Secretary in more than f ive years but he pul led out, saying: “We deplore Russia’s continued defence of the Assad regime.”
The Russian Embassy in London asked if Johnson’s announcement was “theatrics for lack of argument”.
Johnson said US secretary of state Rex Tillerson will still visit Moscow to deliver a “clear, co-ordinated” message.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon expressed doubt over the effectiveness of US air strikes and called for greater efforts to broker peace.
