Norrie can be saviour

Former Scotland boss Craig Brown has faith that his former protege Norrie Innes can help turn around the fortunes of his old club Clyde.

The Cumbernauld team are involved in a tense tussle with Cowdenbeath and Edinburgh City at the bottom of League Two.

Despite a 2-1 win over Annan yesterday, relegation from senior football is still a distinct possibility.

That would be a disaster for Clyde but former Bully Wee gaffer Brown says he’d put money on new chairman Innes transforming the club.

He said: “I’ve know Norrie for years and he played under me at Clyde in the early 1980s before he went to the USA to get qualified in engineering.

“His father, Norrie Senior, was an even better player and is one of the all-time legends at the club.

“I hope, with that kind of heritage and dedication to the cause, the club wil l remain part of Scotland’s senior set-up for many years to come. Right now, Clyde need people at the helm with their best interests at heart.

“Norrie certainly fits that bill. I was delighted when he was appointed chairman.

“I’d actually put money on him mak ing Clyde successful again – but only if they manage to stay in league football first.”

Brown says foundation clubs like Clyde can’t afford to be lost to the game, given their place in the nation’s football history.

He added: “They are one of those clubs that people have a soft spot for.

“It’s a shame they f ind themselves in a struggle and it’s certainly not something anyone could have seriously predicted. “They were a solid second- f l ight club under a succession of managers like Alan Kernaghan, Col in Hendry and Joe Miller. “They’re in a fair bit of trouble just now and are going to have to arrest their downward spiral. “Clearly they are running out of games and if they do go out of the league, it would be a heartbreak for Scottish football.”
