Just three weeks after Eva’s birth, Gwen had surgery to remove the lump in her breast and started chemothera­py soon after.

When tests revealed Gwen carried the faulty BRCA 2 gene, giving her a greatly increased risk of further breast cancer and ovarian cancer, she underwent preventati­ve surgery to minimise the likelihood of getting the disease again.

She said: “I had always known I had a strong family history of breast cancer – my mum, gran and two aunts all had the disease and got through it – so I had always planned to go for genetic testing but was waiting until after I had my family. I thought I had time to wait but I didn’t.

“As a result of my breast cancer, my sisters, Inga and Beth, underwent genetic testing too and it turned out all three of us had the BRCA 2 gene. We all had double mastectomi­es within four months of each other. It was quite a time for our parents.”

Gwen says her two young daughters and husband kept her strong during the year of her cancer treatment and repeated surgeries.

She said: “Being given a cancer diagnosis when you’ve got a newborn baby and two-year-old is far from easy.
