A Hoy there

Damien ready to ship out with Scotland and catch the eye

Damien Hoyland is determined to nail down a Scotland spot during the summer tour.

The 23-year- old winger has two caps so far – off the bench against Italy two years ago and in Japan last year – but has generally been on the fringes of the matchday squad.

However, he finished the season strongly with Edinburgh and wants to make an impression on new national gaffer Gregor Townsend. And with Sean Maitland injured and Tommy Seymour with the Lions, Hoyland has a good chance of starting against Italy in Singapore on June 10.

He said: “It is bad news for Sean that he is injured but it opens up chances for others and I have to be ready.

“Put simply it is a massive opportunity for me. I have been in and around the squad for a while now and have worked hard on the parts of my game that were perhaps not as strong as others.

“This week at the Scotland training camp Gregor spoke to me about what he wants to see from me.” Scotland new boy Dylan Budge is ready to face Sri Lanka’s cricket stars today and Tuesday in Kent.

Grange all-rounder Budge, 21, said “To be in my first Scotland squad is something special. I just can’t wait to get down there with the lads and really give it my all against top-class opponents.” Germany’s Alexander Zverev beat American John Isner 6- 4 6-7 6-1 to reach the Italian Open final.

The 20-year-old became the youngest ATP Masters 1000 finalist since a 19-yearold Novak Djokovic in Miami in 2007. David Bogie won the RSAC Scottish Rally. The Dumfries driver pipped team-mate Fredrik Ahlin to the title. Silverstone’s hosting of the British Grand Prix past 2019 has been put in doubt due to rising costs.
