Spring Fling’s beyond his rivals

- Gordon Brown

Spring Fling stormed to victory in the £ 50,000 Listed Land O’Burns Fillies Stakes at Ayr.

Tackling the minimum trip of 5f for just the second t ime, Henry Candy’s 6 - 1 chance beat Rural Celebration by a length and a quarter with the favour ite and 1,000 Guineas ninth Queen Kindly back in the third.

Winning jockey James Sullivan said: “She got stuck in a pocket but it didn’t do her any harm as she travelling so well. She’s picked up well and won comfortably in the end.

“It’s my first Listed race although I won my fi rst Group 3 race at Epsom on Derby Day earlier this month so it would be nice to get a Group 1 to add to my collection now!”

Lomu, named after the late All Black rugby union legend Jonah Lomu, romped away with the 7f handicap for Paul Mulrennan, also successful in the opener.

Winning trainer Keith Dalgleish said: “He won twice this year over 5f but he needed time to strengthen.

“His work on the gallops suggested that this trip would suit him and he will stay at 7f now.”

Nicholas T just pipped old rival Sophie P in the mile handicap to supply Jim Goldie with another winner at the Craigie course.

The Uplawmoor handler said: “I thought Jimmy Sullivan gave him a very brave ride.

“Instead of getting buffeted by the wind he got cover and then stormed through like a British Lion coming out of a scrum!

“Hopefully he will run again before we maybe have a crack at something like the John Smith’s Cup at York later in the summer.”
