Beautician They’re jealous of my breasts

The beautician at the centre of a row over a BBC video showing women how to apply glitter on their breasts has blamed her boob job for the backlash.

Inverness make- up artist Charlene O’Malley’s Glitter Boobs tutorial sparked complaints from critics who slammed the Beeb for spending licence-payers’ money on the clip.

The controvers­ial online guide shows Charlene spraying her chest purple and putting jewelled stickers over her nipples.

The minute- long video was made by BBC Scotland and posted on their YouTube channel The Social headlined: “Shake your t**s it’s Friday’.

Labour MP Chi Onwurah branded it a “desperate attempt to demonstrat­e relevance” while Mediawatch UK campaigner Helen Lewington slammed it as “soft porn”.

But Charlene, 30, is furious at the criticism – and believes the furore was fuelled by jealousy over her surgically enhanced breasts.

She said: “I guess there are people who are a bit envious.

“Most of the criticism has been from females. People were saying, ‘She’s a stripper,’ and all sorts of things about my breasts.

“I think because I’ve got fake breasts, people have a lot to say.

“I was massively lacking in confidence until I had them done three years ago.

“Yes, I’ve got fake breasts but that shouldn’t matter. I don’t walk down the street like that.”

The mum also hit out at her video being described as “soft porn”. Topless revellers at last week’s Glastonbur­y festival turned up wearing gl itter. Charlene said: “I’m a make-up artist and this is art. I don’t see it as anything sexual at all.

“For me, it ’ s a trend, it ’ s happening at festivals right now and I just covered it because I thought it was relevant. Young people pay the licence fee too.

“I think someone criticisin­g this said their children could be watching this on the internet and I was thinking, ‘Children shouldn’t be on the internet unsupervis­ed.’

“My daughter’s 11 and she doesn’t get on the internet because she’s just not old enough to see some of the things on there.”

Charlene has been doing beauty guides for the BBC for more than 12 months.

She said: “I’m proud to be helping cater for a different generation. The Social is aimed at a younger audience.

“There are lots of things about being transgende­r and issues that affect 18 to 34-year-olds.

“It’s not the usual content you get on the BBC but it’s meant to be a service for everyone – not just older people. I’ve had people wanting to book in and have their glitter boobs done.”

A BBC insider said the row had not put the station off working with Charlene and they will not be removing the video.

A BBC spokesman said: “The Social has a specif ic remit to create content aimed at 18 to 34- year- olds and the topics covered are led by our audience.

“In this case, the content was all produced by young women and aimed at their peers.

“The overwhelmi­ng response from the 160,000 who viewed it was very positive.”
