Sharp Sons dominate Saints

- St Mirren ...............0 Dumbarton ...........1

St Mirren boss Jack Ross was outraged with his players at full-time as they fell to Sons in an awful performance.

The home side were looking flat from the outset as former buddie Tom Walsh went close in the opening minutes, dragging his shot wide.

Stelios Demetriou threw a vicious elbow at Dumbarton defender Sam Wardrop just before half-time which led to a deserved straight red card. Greg Morrison then missed a golden opportunity just after the break for Dumbarton.

St Mirren keeper Craig Samson did his best to keep the game goalless saving well from a Stuart Carswell chance.

Ally Roy should have scored from a Walsh pass but his shot was wide of the post. Walsh then smashed home an impressive effort after racing away from defender Adam Eckersle sealing all three points for Sons.

Saints manager Ross said: “When you’re not playing well and you lose a man it makes it even more difficult.

“It was an ill-judged decision by Wardrop to make that challenge, his punishment will come in how he’s let h is team-mates down.”

Stevie Aitken praised Walsh in that accident because they are the most important people right now.

“But from a football context for us to come down here and play was an absolute disgrace. The players deserve tremendous credit.

“They were determined not to lose as we didn’t want any excuses. It’s a brilliant point.”

Doonhamers gaffer Gary Naysmith said: “Robbo phoned me at nine o’clock on Friday night to make me aware of what had happened.

“I don’t want to get into the rights and wrongs of the game going ahead but want to credit the Inverness players who gave their manager everything.”

Queens Stephen Dobbie and Caley Jags’ Joe Chalmers came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half.

A header from Queens’ Jason Kerr dropped just wide after the break before Kyle Jacobs let f ly from the edge of the penalty box but Mark Ridgers’ handling was flawless.

Sub George Oakley almost won it for Caley Jags late on but Alan Martin blocked before Queens sub Derek Lyle volleyed wide in injury time. and said: “He has all the ability in the world and he took his goal really well.

“I think you always try to do well against your former team and I’m sure Tom will be delighted with the way he played.

A lot might be made about the sending off but when they had 11 we were really strong in the game. We deserved it.”

A loss for St Mirren means they drop to second place behind Dundee United.
