Bill Shankly statue sale

-

A SCULPTURE of football legend Bill Shankly has sold for nearly £ 34,000.

The miniature bronze was made in preparation for the famous statue of the former Liverpool FC manager that stands outside their Anfield stadium.

It has the Ayrshire-born boss with his arms aloft and wearing a Reds scarf and was given to the club in 1997.

The maquette was part of a sale of memorabilia from Liverpool’s now redeveloped main stand.

Don, 53, who had diabetes, died at home after missing meetings with kidney specialists because he’d been fined £150 by the parcel giants for attending a hospital appointment.

His grief- stricken wife Ruth received a note from DPD chief executive Dwain McDonald which contained the error. McDonald’s letter referred to him as “Ron” instead of Don.

Ruth said: “I finally got a card from CEO Dwain McDonald – but unbelievably he called Don ‘Ron’.

“How can you send out what is supposed to be a genuine heartfelt message and get the person’s name wrong? It’s caused me further upset.”

GMB regional organiser Calne Waterson has revealed the union’s Scots members had raised cash for Ruth in the aftermath of Don’s death. He also claims the delivery firm had yet to make a donation.

Calne added: “A JustGiving fund by GMB members in Scotland has raised about £ 2500 for the family as they struggle to deal with the death of Don, who was the main wage earner.

“DPD have given them nothing. But it’s hardly surprising when the chief executive writes Don’s widow a condolence card and can’t even get his name right.”

The furore fol lowing Don’s death led to McDonald vowing that DPD’s 5000 self- employed drivers
