Three die as crowd hit by van in attack

-

Three people have been killed and 30 injured after a man rammed his van into a group of people outside a restaurant in Germany.

The incident, which police refused to rule out as a terror attack, happened in the old city centre of Muenster yesterday afternoon.

The driver shot himself after ploughing into the crowd, police have said.

Several of those injured were in a critical condition.

A security source added: “The scenar io is such that an attack cannot be ruled out.”

The van smashed into people sitting at tables out side the Gros ser Kiepenkerl restaurant , which is popular with tourists, a police spokeswoman said.

Officers said they were not looking for further suspects after the driver took his own life but on Twitter they urged people to avoid the city centre.

The incident came one year to the day after a truck attack in Stockholm that killed five people, and also evoked memories of a December 2016 truck attack in Berlin that killed 12.

A n d r e a Na h l e s , parliamentary leader of the social democrats and junior par tner in Chancel lor Angela Merkel ’s rul ing coalition, said: “I’m shocked by the news from Muenster.

“My thoughts are with the victims and their relatives.

“I hope our authorities can quickly clari f y the ba ck g round t o thi s incident.”
