Fans’ joy over Car Share’s final trip
Peter Kay thrilled fans by breaking his silence for the first time since cancelling his comedy tour.
The funnyman looked relaxed and happy in a video message introducing the final two episodes of his hit sitcom Car Share at a charity screening.
The Phoenix Nights star, 44, told a capacity audience at Blackpool Opera House the episodes were “a bit different”.
He said of the first episode: “We used to drive around quite a bit and we just wanted to see what would happen if we filmed a whole journey without a script, just making it up.”
But in the second, fans finally see what happens in the will-they-won’t-they relationship between Kay’s supermarket assistant manager John Redmond and his passenger Kayleigh Kitson, played by Sian Gibson.
Friday’s screening, the f irst of three, won warm praise for Kay, who cancelled a 113-gig stand-up tour in D e c emb e r “due to unforeseen f ami l y circumstances”. A million tickets had been sold.
After the screening, fans hai led Kay a “comedy genius”. One posted: “Never in my life laughed so much and so honoured to watch the perfect final ending to Car Share.”
The showings are raising money f o r the L i l y Foundation, who treat children with mitochondrial disease.
The two episodes will be on BBC One in May.
