Fachie feels Wells chuffed with 4 golds

-

to take Scotland’s medal haul to 15 in the first three days.

Fachie, 34, and pilot Matt Rotherham were in superb form as they set a new world record on the way to glory in the Blind and Visually Impaired Sprint.

And as he savoured his second gold Down Under to add to the two he won at Glasgow 2014 – only Wells and bowler Alex Marshall have four – Fachie grinned: “It’s brilliant.

“It has been a crazy couple of weeks. The ambition was to come here and win four. It’s mindblowing to be on a list with a Who’s Who of Scottish talent with this number of medals.

“I know Wells got four golds, one silver and a bronze so I am almost up with him now.

“We used to do a session at Meadowbank when he was mentoring a few of the talented young Scottish athletes.

“I used to run 100m and 200m. We had a few chats and he gave me a few pointers. It didn’t work for me in athletics – but it’s all worked out for the best.

“We need another games now to top it. I might go to Birmingham in 2022, we’ll see – as long as we keep improving, we’d love to do it.

“There will be plenty of Scots in Birmingham. It’s tempting and I’d love to be there with Matt.”

Incredibly, the pair were so ramped up around the Anna Meares Velodrome that they went faster than the men’s sprinters.

Fachie laughed: “We jokingly set a target to go faster than all the able-bodied guys in the sprints – we’ve never done that before but we did it out there.

“I guess we hold the track record here now. It was just a fraction but we got it. And to get that world record this morning, that was really special.”

Pilot Rotherham, a top-class sprinter in his own right, was born and raised in England but now feels he’s an honorary Scot.

The 23-year-old even learned the words to Flower of Scotland for the occasion.

He said: “I race for Scotland, I’ve got a kilt on and I have loved representing Scotland.

“Although there’s not much Scottish blood in me, there is some somewhere but that’s going back a bit.”
