Kestin’s fashion revolution in Trainspotting heartland
Kestin Hare was delighted when makers of the hit film visited his London store and asked him to provide outfits for Renton, Begbie and the other lead actors. One of the outf its Kestin designed was worn by Ewen Bremner’s Spud on the poster for the movie. Now the 39- year- old has opened a new design studio and store in Leith’s shore area. Kestin, of East Lothian, who two years ago teamed up with Marks & Spencer to help revitalise their menswear collection, said: “When many people think of Leith, they think of Trainspotting but there is so much more to this creative and stylish place. “We’ve been inspired by our new surroundings in the design of our new collection, we wanted to shoot the advertising campaign that went along with it in Leith – and so it seemed perfect to call on the people of Leith to model it for us too. “A few of our friends and neighbours were asked after a couple of pints but we also went out grabbing people in and around the studio. And we are delighted with the results.” Kestin launched his own menswear label in 2014 after more than 15 years of working for brands including Nigel Cabourn and Reiss.
His new campaign features Leithers including a carpenter, restaurant boss and an artisan coffee roaster.
Kestin, whose grandfather was from Leith, said: “We feature 15 Leithers as part of our campaign and on our website.
“They are all good- looking guys with a great sense of style and they are all characters in their own way, which comes across in our photographs.”
Recal ling his Trainspotting approach, Kestin said: “We didn’t have our studio in Leith at the time but the guys from the film’s wardrobe department came into our store in Shoreditch in London and couldn’t understand why there were so many folk from Edinburgh working there.
“They told us they were shooting a film in Edinburgh and we ended up with the cast wearing pieces of ours throughout the film – including Ewan McGregor and Jonny Lee Miller.
“Ewen Bremner, in particular, wears a lot of our designs.”
Other celebrity fans of Kestin’s brand include actors Tom Hardy and David Schwimmer, Oasis star Liam Gal lagher and Leith- based chef Tom Kitchin.
