this was where paedophile priest abused me.. this became my cage
Brave victim goes back to scene of attacks SURvIvoR tEllS of hARRowINg oRDEAl
A woman raped by a disgraced Catholic priest when she was a child has revisited the scene of his attacks for the first time.
The victim was abused by Father Gerry Nugent for four years after she went to live with her grandmother.
Nugent targeted her between the ages of 11 and 15 when her f ami l y separated.
The survivor, who we are calling Teresa, took the brave decision to go back to one of the dingy locations where Nugent carried out his sickening abuse.
She identif ied a drying area surrounded by metal bars, which she likened to a cage, and a filthy stairwell as spots where she was abused by Nugent.
The attacks happened at flats in the west end of Glasgow where she stayed with her gran.
Teresa, who asked us not to reveal the exact address, said: “He would often visit when my gran was out and we’d end up going out for walks. He wore a hooded cape, which was quite sinister.
“He would be scanning the area looking at other children and asking me, ‘ Who’s that. Who do they live with. Do they have any problems?’
“It’s quite obvious to me now that he was scouting for other potential victims.
“He would take me to spots near my house including a dirty stairwell. He could have been caught at any moment but I think that actually appealed to him.
“Another spot was a drying area surrounded by metal bars which was like a cage. I just submitted.
“He was the family priest and I didn’t know what else to do.”
Teresa, now 51, believes there are many more child victims of Nugent. She said: “My school chaplain asked me when I was 15 if I was ever alone with Father Nugent. He said I should never be in that position. “I’m becoming more and more convinced people in the Church hierarchy knew.” Nugent was removed as a parish priest following the murder of Angelika Kluk, whose body was found under the floorboards of his church, St Patrick’s in Anderston, Glasgow, in 2006. Polish national Angelika, 23, was murdered by serial se killer Peter To bin, who had been unwittingly hired as a handyman at St Patrick’s.
Nugent told the court during the trial that he had been involved in a sexual relationship with Angelika.
The shamed clergyman died from a heart attack aged 66 in 2010.
Another former priest, Father Paul Moore, 82, was jailed on Wednesday for nine years for sexually abusing boys aged between five and 13 in Ayrshire from 1977 to 1981.
He also assaulted a student priest between 1995 and 1996. Teresa said: “His abuse is distressing and the fact he put his victims through the ordeal of a court case is just awful.”
A second woman came forward to claim she was abused as a chi ld by disgraced Nugent.
The woman, also from the Glasgow area, has told lawyers Nugent abused her in the early 80s when she was about 11.
Both women are being represented by Thompsons Solicitors in compensation claims against the Catholic church. Lawyer Alan Rodgers said : “We believe it ’ s imperative any possible victims come forward.”
The Archdiocese of Glasgow said: “Distressing stories emerged during and immediately following the Angelika Kluk murder trial which were previously unknown to the Church and which led to Father Nugent’s swift removal from parish ministry.
“It may be that no one will ever know the full truth of all his activities but the Church remains ready and willing to cooperate with the police and authorities to assist survivors.”
