Bruno helped me fight demons

One of Br i tain ’ s sport­ing he­roes has ad­mit­ted he thought of tak­ing his own life but says boxing leg­end Frank Bruno helped to pull him through his worst times.

Scot­tish par­a­lympian gold medal­list Dave Smith said the ex-fighter – who has fa­mously bat­tled his own demons – un­der­stands his “dark places” and of­fered him cru­cial ad­vice.

Now Dave, from Aviemore, in the High­lands, is to rep­re­sent Great Bri­tain again in his first ma­jor race since fight­ing cancer for the third time.

He is to take part in a 20km time trial at the UCI Para- Cyling Road World Cup in Os­tend, Bel­gium, next month.

Dave, who was given the all- clear from cancer in tests, also re­vealed a gr uel l ing bat tle w ith de­pres­sion. He said: “It got so low that I lay in a shower think­ing about tak­ing my own life.”

Dave told how he met ex- heavy­weight boxing champ Frank at a sport­ing lunch.

He said: “He’s ob­vi­ously had his own men­tal health bat­tles and we talked about the prob­lems.

“He said ‘ Be kind to your­self’ and how im­por­tant is the sup­port of friends and family. It was good ad­vice.”
