COUNCILLOR SUSPENDED FOR JEWISH POST

-

A former Labour MP has been suspended from the party over online comments he made about the Jewish community.

Jim Sheridan wrote: “For almost all my adult life, I have had the utmost respect and empathy for the Jewish community and thei r historic suffering.

“No longer, due to what they and their Blairite plotters are doing to my party and the long-suffering people of Britain who need a radical Labour government.”

The ex- Pai s ley and Renfrewshire North MP – who is now a Renfrewshire councillor – is understood to have been suspended yesterday after a complaint was received. Labour said they do not comment on individual cases.

A spokesman said: “The Labour Par ty take al l complaints of anti-Semitism extremely seriously and are committed to challenging and campaigning against it in all its forms.

“All complaints about anti- Semitism are ful ly investigated in line with our rules and any appropriate disciplinary action is taken.”

Speaking about the post, Sheridan said: “I have every sympathy with the Jewish struggle and the horrors they have come through, and on many occasions I have signed the condolences book.

“I ’ m just angr y and frustrated that my party have been hijacked by people who are using anti-Semitism as an excuse to undermine the leadership of our party.”

Conservative MP for East R e n f r ews h i r e Pa u l M a s t er t on s a id the “appalling” post shows “how deeply the problem of antiSemitism runs in elements of the Labour Party”.
