Fashion guru

I’ve never really had backing and I would like that to change

- Julie-Anne Barnes

After almost four decades dressing some of the world’s most influential stars, cult designer Pam Hogg still feels like an outsider.

Kate Moss and Lady Gaga wear her catsuits to red- carpet events, following in the fashion footsteps of Debbie Harry and Siouxsie Sioux – who championed her years before.

Her creations appear in Vogue and the front row of her fashion shows is packed with A-listers.

But Pam said this is the first year in a long time she’s not had to borrow cash to keep her label going.

In a blue tracksuit, cream Chelsea boots, orange studded cap and wearing her trademark red lipstick, the Glasgow School of Art graduate reveals it has taken until now to barely break even.

“This year was the first time in years I didn’t have to go to bed at night thinking who can I borrow money from to pay my studio rent,” she said, her eyes filling with tears.

“That’s serious. People think I’m on a par with all these people who’ve got 20 assistants and millions at their disposal. That’s not the case. I’d like some clarity.

“I’d like a team around me. But I can’t have that until I earn. I ’ ve never had sponsorship. I’ve never had backing and I’d like that to change.

“A lot of people think I’d never do a collaboration or commission. I’m dying to do that. Look at me, I’m sitting head to toe in Adidas. Why am I not sitting in Adidas by Pam Hogg?”

Pam is back in her hometown of Glasgow for a col laboration with the National Theatre, creating costumes for a new play.

She’s jug g l ing several other projects but, season after season, she c o nt i nu e s to work alone,
