Record eludes Laura

- Mark Woods

Laura Muir’s record bid came up short at the Diamond League but the Scot still reckons her season remains a smash hit.

The European 1500 metres gold medallist was more than a second short of Kelly Holmes’ UK best over 1000m despite winning in 2:33.92 in Birmingham.

But the 25-year- old is now planning her end-ofyear party with just two races left, including the Diamond Final in Brussels.

And with three major medals plus a first-class vet degree, it’s been a summer that takes top billing.

She said: “I’d give it a strong nine. Considering the build-up to this season was real ly tough and considering the exams, I was healthy and fit.

“I’m running well and I came away with the main target of the year of being European champion.

“But next year the aim is always going to be to get on the podium at the World Championships.

“I set myself targets – to compete in the final of all the major championships. I’ve done that in all five now. But if I can get a medal at worlds, that’d be great.”

Jake Wightman’s crack at Tom McKean’s Scottish 800m record also failed when he finished seventh, while Eilidh Doyle was fourth in the 400m hurdles.

Dina Asher- Smith left Berlin with three golds but was edged out by Shaunae Miller-Uibo in the 200m.

And Reece Prescod ran the fourth-quickest 100m by a Brit only to be edged out by US ace Christian Coleman in a photo finish with both done in 9.94secs.

Prescod said : “The Americans are world-class competition – they are the guys I have to beat. I’m definitely close but I still have a lot of work to do.”

Meanwhile, Eilish McColgan confessed she was running on empty after a Euro 5000m silver.

The Scot came fourth in the 3000m to secure her spot in the Diamond Final.

She said: “I barely slept after my final – I wasn’t even out partying – so I wasn’t coming in fresh. But I’ve done what I needed to do.”
