Butch: Draws cost title – all of us must stop repeat

- Pollok ................................. 3 Cambuslang...................... 2

Bryan Young insists Pollok can’t be drawn back into bad habits after breaking their run of stalemates at the fourth attempt.

Michael McMullin marked his first game since signing on at Newlandsfield with what proved to be the winner as Lok grabbed their first victory of the Premiership season.

David Green shot inches wide with the last kick of the game as Cambuslang suffered a third defeat in four games on the road in the space of 11 days.

Young, who grabbed the opener, won everything in the junior game at Auchinleck before swapping Beechwood for Glasgow Southside last summer.

While Talbot took the title race down to the final day, Lok were third having drawn seven games – the joint most of any side in the west region top flight.

And Butch said: “It’s great to

eventually get the win after drawing our first three league games. Hopefully we can kick on from here.

“Last season too many draws was the reason our title hopes faded so we need to make sure we don’t allow this to happen again.

“We have a good squad but need to do better if we want to be serious challengers for honours.”

Young put Tony McInally’s men one up right on half-time when his shot took a wicked deflection off defender Jack Breslin and flew into the top corner.

But with 20 minutes remaining newly-promoted Lang were level as John Gemmell stooped to head home Chris Duff’s cross.

It only lasted 10 minutes thanks to Adam Forde who headed home Ewan McNeil’s free-kick. And Lok were two up in 84 minutes when former Albion Rovers defender McMullin picked the ball up 25 yards out and after a few stepovers superbly drilled into the bottom corner.

Darren Ramsay reduced the deficit to one with a neat finish in injury-time.

Lang gaffer Paul McColl, who watched from the terracing due to serving a six-match ban, said: “I couldn’t ask for any more from the boys and the least we deserved was a draw.

“We are still trying to find our feet in this league but we have shown we can compete at this level and won’t just be making up the numbers.

“It has been a tough start as we have played our last four games away from home. That needs looked at when the fixture lists are made up.”
