Wright: Two-goal Tony will get better

- Tony Haggerty

TOMMY WRIGHT is planning to give plenty of opponents Watt for with exCeltic kid Tony in the Saints ranks.

Watt struck twice as Wright’s Saints squeezed past Queens in extra time.

Drey Wright also scored his first goal for the Perth men and Callum Hendry was on target with Lyndon Dykes and Stephen Dobbie replying for Queens.

Saints boss Wright said: “Tony came in to score goals and he is happy and working hard.

“He will get better with his match fitness because he hasn’t played a lot of football in 14 months.

“He would be nowhere near St Johnstone if he had taken a normal career path.

“We are lucky to have Tony but he is also lucky to have us.

“They will feel unlucky to go in 1-1 at half time but we bossed the second half and in extra time our fitness told.”

St Johnstone took the lead on 25 minutes when Watt pounced on a Murray Dvidson mishit to score from six yards. Queens drew level in first- half stoppage time as Dykes unleashed a 25-yard half volley which found the bottom corner of the net.

Although both sides hit the woodwork in the second half neither team could find a winner and the match went into extra time.

St Johnstone got their noses in front on 94 minutes when Watt pulled the ball back for Wright to smash home.

Watt looked to have made the game safe at 3-1 when his shot went in off the post on 104 minutes.

Queen’s were handed a lifeline as Dobbie was brought down by Sa int s sub A l i McCann and the striker scored the penalty himself.

Saints clinched it when sub Hendry pounced on slack defensive play by Michael Doyle and waltzed past the keeper to stroke the ball home seconds from the end.
