McCann’s suffering from Ayr rage as his Dens duds lose plot

- Martin Cameron

Nei l McCann admi t ted shambolic nine-man Dundee were lucky to escape with a 3- 0 thumping by Ian McCal l ’s Championship side.

Lawrence Shankland sent McCann’s men spinning out of the Betfred Cup with a double and Michael Moffat’s late strike merely rubbed salt into the Dens wounds.

McCann saw both Sof ien Moussa and Genseric Kusunga sent off as they lost the plot towards the end.

The Dens Park boss said: “It was really poor from Moussa and Gensy. I told Moussa he can’t make silly fouls, especially the one where he dives down to make a tackle when he’s already on a yellow card.

“For whatever reason he has lost his composure. Gensy has then lost his composure at the end and is now banned for next weekend which adds insult to injury. “As a team, there were not too many plus marks. It was a terrible display.

“Ay r were very good and if anything the 3- 0 scoreline flattered us.”

Ayr should have taken the lead in 38 minutes. Andy Murdoch latched on to Moffat ’s cutback after he’d robbed Kharl Madianga.

His shot was bound for the top corner until Jack Hamilton, tipped it over. It seemed that Dundee just couldn’t be as poor after the break.

New signing Benjamin Kallman was thrown on as a sub but it was Shankland who struck.

A thunderous kick down field by keeper Ross Doohan caught

out the Dundee defence and Shankland wasted no time in hammering a left-foot finish high into the net.

That should have been the wake-up call McCann’s men needed but instead they lurched from one setback to another.

Much- maligned Tunisian striker Moussa was pitched on from the bench in a bid to salvage something.

Unfortunately, he was like a man possessed when he came on. A crude 67th-minute foul on Daniel Harvie brought a booking, before a crazy barge on Mark Kerr 10 minutes later saw him receive the inevitable second yellow card.

Shankland helped himself to his second from Harvie’s cross in 86 minutes.

Moffat wrapped things up with a simple finish a minute from the end, prior to Kusunga’s shocking challenge on him bringing a straight red card.

Unsurprisingly, Dundee were booed off at the end by their brassed-off fans.

Ayr boss Ian McCall said: “Lawrence has proved he can score goals against anybody.

“It was a brilliant all-round team effort so all credit to all of the lads.”
