Psycho nailed for killings
When female taxi driver Catherine McChord was found murdered in her black cab in 1982, police initially suspected she had been killed in a revenge attack for a spot-theball scam she had been involved in years before.
But when Elizabeth Walton, a nurse, was found murdered and mutilated in the grounds of West Coats Primary School a few months later, police feared the deaths were linked.
Iain Scoular, then 24, came to their attention when he claimed he’d seen someone at the scene but as they investigated, his story began to change.
Witnesses came forward and forensic evidence saw him charged with the double murder.
The trial at the High Court in Glasgow in 1983 saw psychiatrists describe him as a psychopath and a jury found him guilty.
Scoular was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
