Warriors miss shock by seconds

- David Kelso

Depleted Glasgow fell agonisingly short of pulling off a Pro14 shock as they lost by just one point to Irish Euro stars Munster.

Coach Dave Rennie was full of praise for his Warriors side – who were missing a host of Scotland players – as they suffered heartbreak in Limerick, going within 12 seconds of slapping down the full-strength home side.

Glasgow had opened up a 14-point gap going into the final quarter.

But Munster rallied to steal glory thanks to Rory Scannell’s 55- metre penalty with the last kick of the game. Rennie said: “I can’t praise them highly enough for their commitment and guts.

“We can take a lot of positives, especially from the performances of some of the younger guys.” His side couldn’t stop James Cronin scoring the opening try before JJ Hanrahan added the conversion.

There was a blow for Glasgow when Sam Johnson went off with a shoulder problem. On came late call- up Stafford McDowall and within seconds the Scots created a brilliant try. Slick handling from inside their 22 created the time and space for George Horne to race in from 50 metres.

Brother Pete Horne pulled the conversion wide then missed a penalty. But George burst back into the spotlight to finish clinically after a break by Nick Grigg, setting up an easy kick for Pete. Matt Fagerson then ploughed over after a fractured scrum.

Hanrahan slotted a penalty but back came Glasgow to set up a try for Pete Horne who converted.

Alex Wootton then went over in the corner to give Munster hope. Alby Mathewson pounced for another, goaled by Ian Keatley, before Scannell’s sickener.
