struck and Rennie added another to seal the win.

Petrie said: “We lost a poor goal but the reaction was superb and I thought we were well worth the three points.”

City boss Darren Dods said: “We got our noses in front only to give away poor goals which was extremely disappointing.” Gary Caldwell laid into his Thistle flops and questioned their bottle after they lost for the second time under his charge.

The Jags were sunk 13 minutes from time when Ayr found a winner after constant second-half pressure.

Caldwell was pleased with an improved performance but the new gaffer is still looking to make wholesale changes to the squad in January.

He said: “It must be a mentality issue. It’s not the way we’re playing or the quality we have in the team.

“It’s winners and losers in training and real ising when you lose that there are repercussions.

“This club shouldn’t be losing matches and should be higher up this league. But we are where we are for a reason – and that must change. “The January window is coming up and I’ll find the reason we aren’t winning and make changes to make this club better and stronger. “Itt was much better than tha last week in an attacking atta sense. We conceded con a poor goal from fro a set- piece and aft er that were chasing cha the game.” Thistle Th had been the better be side in the first half ha without creating a ny clear-cut chances, ch with Jai QuitongoQ going close

with a header in 27 minutes, just after Christie El l iott forced a decent save out of Ross Doohan.

There is real grit about this Ayr side and they grew stronger as they game wore on.

Craig Moore was only inches away with a header from Declan McDaid’s free-kick in 75 minutes.

In the very next attack Lawrence Shankland hit the bar and Elliott cleared off the line as Moore tried to score with the rebound.

But Thistle couldn’t stop Ayr and from the resulting corner Rose powered a header that hit the underside of the bar and seemed to go over the line before Moore made sure.

Ayr boss Ian McCall said: “It looked like it was going to be a 0-0 draw. We weren’t clinical, which isn’t like us but our players will never give up.

“I wasn’t sure who scored the goal, whether it was Michael or Craig – Moore is saying it’s his, not Rose’s.

“We also had three good shouts for penalties but Bobby Madden doesn’t give Ayr United penalties so we were unlikely to get one.

“It was good to win again after losing to Ross County last week but although we lost that game we garnered a lot of confidence because of the way we played.”
