Horror start for Harvey

-

New Berwick boss Johnny Harvey had a league debut to forget as his side had THREE men sent off in a crushing 3-0 defeat to Cowdenbeath.

The 36-year-old former Penicuik gaffer is facing a selection headache for next week’s clash with Stirling Albion as his bare bones side lost John Neil, Robert Wilson and Chris Hamilton to red cards.

Neil was sent packing inside 10 minutes for kicking out at David Cox and Cowden were ahead in 28 minutes when Harvey Swann fired home.

Swann doubled the lead before the break from the spot after Wilson tripped Martin Scott. It got worse in 77 minutes when the defender walked for a foul right in front of the ref, with Hamilton following him two minutes later.

Fraser Mullen wrapped it up with Cowden’s third to leave Berwick second bottom on six points.

Harvey said: “We only had 15 players available today and with three facing suspension for next week that’s a problem.

“But we have to look at the positives – even though I have only been here for just over a week, I can see a massive improvement.”

Cowden manager Gary Bollan said: “We came to get three points and that’s what we achieved so we have to be happy.”

Edinburgh City boss James McDonaugh hailed his side as captain Craig Thomson’s header sealed a 1-0 win at Stirling Albion and kept them out clear at the top of the table.

He said: “It’s one of our best wins of the season. We had six players out and a few played who were not 100 per cent.”

Peterhead saw off title rivals Clyde 3-1 in a game that finished 10-a-side.

Scott Brown gave the Blue Toon the lead before team-mate Mick Dunlop saw red for a crude tackle on David Goodwillie.

Clyde’s Tom Lang picked up two quick bookings to even up the numbers before Lyle added Peterhead’s second.

Karim Belmokhtar’s cross deflected off Jason Brown to give the Bully Wee hope but Lyle soon wrapped it up with another thumping strike.

Annan are still in the hunt after Owen Moxon’s first-half strike bagged a 1-0 win over Elgin and moved the Galabankies into third.

And bottom of the table Albion Rovers had Gary Fisher sent off as they lost 3-0 to Queen’s Park – Lewis Hawke, Jamie McKernon and Smart Osadolor all on target for the Spiders.
