Poem speaks to us through the ages

-

The poignant words on today’s front page come from a poem published on the first anniversary of the end of World War I.

The Haunted Hour appeared on page nine of the Daily Record on November 11, 1919.

The poem is signed simply D.G, with no other clue given about its author.

While honouring the war dead, it questions if a better world had been achieved as a result of the brutal conflict.

It asks: “Is the flag of progress furled, And a myriad martyrs dead in vain?”
