Father’s tribute to tragic airman

-

The heartbroken dad of Corrie McKeague fought back tears at a memorial service for the missing airman yesterday.

Martin McKeague, 49, described the RAF gunner as “always laughing” and “carefree” and said he would not want those he loved to dwell on his death.

Martin struggled to keep his composure as he said: “We did everything we possibly could to f ind you, son.”

Corrie disappeared two years ago following a night out in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

Martin told more than 250 mourners inside St Columba’s Church in Cupar, Fife: “We’re not here to dwell on my son’s passing or relive the horrific journey of the last two years during which the facts and evidence have now shown us, without doubt, that his young life ended far too soon.

“Corrie would not have wanted us to do that.”

The 23-year-old disappeared in the early hours of September 24, 2016.

CCTV footage captured him walking into a refuse loading bay but he was never seen again. Police believe it is “most likely” he climbed into a bin and fell asleep.

The bin was collected hours later and its contents ended up at a landfill site in Milton, Cambridgeshire.

Pol ice spent months searching the site but failed to find any sign of Corrie.
