Hendo has City sky high

-

James McDonaugh hailed his Edinburgh City side after a Blair Henderson double took them to the top of the league.

Henderson scored either side of a wonder strike from Gerard Hernando Escuriola to seal a 2-1 win at Albion Rovers.

And the City boss said: “Winning on a lovely sunny day on a good pitch is the best thing but grinding out a win on a difficult pitch is the second best. It is a terrific win.”

Kevin Harper’s reign as Rovers boss got off to a disappointing start when Henderson rose to head home a cross from Adam Watson in 14 minutes.

Rovers were level when Escuriola spotted Calum Antell off his line to send in a chip from 45 yards.

But Henderson struck again when Graham Taylor’s shot hit the striker to deflect the ball over the helpless Peter Morrison.

Harper said: “If we get that effort, commitment and quality every week we will slowly climb the table.”

That result meant City leapfrogged Peterhead after the Blue Toon were beaten 2-0 at Hampden.

A Ciaran Summers double secured Queen’s Park’s fifth win in six and brought Peterhead’s seven-game winning streak to an end.

Blue Toon boss Jim McInally said: “Credit to Queen’s Park. They outfought us and it’s a kick up the backside.”

Queen’s boss Mark Roberts said: “To beat the team top of the league and limit them to very little is pleasing.”

Gary Bollan hailed his spirited Cowdenbeath side after they pulled off a shock 2-0 win at play-off chasers Annan.

Second-half goals from Kris Renton and sub Josh Skelly were enough to seal the win and Bollan said: “We defended brilliantly, our keeper was excellent and we passed the ball well at times. We thoroughly deserved the win.”

But Annan boss Peter Murphy didn’t agree and said: “We played the majority of the football and dominated but they got two breakaway goals.”

A Dylan Cogil strike two minutes from time snatched a point for Clyde against Stirling Albion.

Daniel Jardine had given Albion the lead but Cogil rifled in a failed Stirling clearance to claim a point.

Two goals and two assists by Paul Willis gave Berwick a 4-2 win at Elgin.

Trialists Lewis Barr and Craig Hume also netted for the Black and Gold with Jon-Paul McGovern and Matthew Cooper on the scoresheet for Elgin.
