The Scot was the surprise name when the 10 contestants were announced last week.

But Barrowman can’t wait to get started and is determined to be a big presence in camp, saying he will stick up for others and not let bullies get their way. His husband Scott and parents are heading Down Under to support him and he intends to be the last one standing.

He said: “I would be lying to you if I said that I didn’t want to win.”

As he prepared to enter the camp, Barrowman also revealed he still holds out hope of adopting a child. But he said: “I can’t just go out and buy one at Tesco.

“It has to be a partnership thing and I don’t think Scott is ready for it. He has to be on board.”

Meanwhile, the Krankies – who starred in panto with Barrowman in Manchester last year – are backing their mate for glory.

Jimmy Krankie star Janette Tough, 71, claimed: “John has a real chance of winning if the snowflakes and the PC brigade leave him alone.

“People get offended over the slightest things these days and even the oldest jokes are deemed offensive. Folk in Manchester complained about John’s double entendres in the panto. They need to lighten up.

“John says what he thinks, doesn’t hold back, calls a spade a spade and is very open about everything.

“If folk in the camp and watching on TV can deal with ththat then he’s on to a winner.” Ian Tough, 71, believes Barrowman will have no problem tackling the Bushtucker Trials.

He said: “He’s not a fearty and if he does get scared of anything, I will be very surprised.

“His energy levels are incredible and he will throw himself into the trials. He isn’t a quitter.”

The Krankies revealed they have been asked to do I’m a Celebrity in the past but refused.

Janette joked: “We have a wee houseouse 20km from where they f ilm I’m a Celebrityty so why on e a r t h wouwouldld we leave our comfortable home to roug h it in t he jungle?”
