Police bill hits £10m for Trump and Harry
Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding and Donald Trump’s UK visit cost almost £10million to police.
Thousands of ext ra officers were drafted in for the two events within 12 weeks.
Thames Valley Police said t he y s p e n t a l mos t £ 9.5million on the Royal wedding at Windsor Castle in May and the presidential visit in July.
However, the Force applied to the Home Office special funding scheme and recouped £ 7.85mi l l ion, leaving the force to cover almost £1.6million pounds.
President Trump’s visit to Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, Chequers, Buckinghamshire and Windsor Castle in July cost £ 6m to police with the wedding at St George’s Chapel on May 19 in Windsor Castle, which was attended by crowds of 110,000, cost over £3,428,650 million to police.
However, the f igures reveal Thames Valley Police was able to recover 91 per cent of the money spent to police Trump’s visit from the Home Office, but only 69 per cent of the money spent on the Royal Wedding was reimbursed.
There is no guarantee that these figures, under review, will not increase.
Thames Valley Police said: “In circumstances such as these, Police and Crime Commissioners can apply to the Home Office for special grant funding to meet additional costs that would be incurred from policing unexpected and exceptional events within their areas.”
