Po­lice bill hits £10m for Trump and Harry

Prince Harry and Meghan’s wed­ding and Don­ald Trump’s UK visit cost al­most £10mil­lion to po­lice.

Thou­sands of ext ra of­fi­cers were drafted in for the two events within 12 weeks.

Thames Val­ley Po­lice said t he y s p e n t a l mos t £ 9.5mil­lion on the Royal wed­ding at Wind­sor Cas­tle in May and the pres­i­den­tial visit in July.

How­ever, the Force ap­plied to the Home Of­fice spe­cial fund­ing scheme and re­couped £ 7.85mi l l ion, leav­ing the force to cover al­most £1.6mil­lion pounds.

Pres­i­dent Trump’s visit to Blen­heim Palace, Ox­ford­shire, Che­quers, Buck­ing­hamshire and Wind­sor Cas­tle in July cost £ 6m to po­lice with the wed­ding at St George’s Chapel on May 19 in Wind­sor Cas­tle, which was at­tended by crowds of 110,000, cost over £3,428,650 mil­lion to po­lice.

How­ever, the f ig­ures re­veal Thames Val­ley Po­lice was able to re­cover 91 per cent of the money spent to po­lice Trump’s visit from the Home Of­fice, but only 69 per cent of the money spent on the Royal Wed­ding was re­im­bursed.

There is no guar­an­tee that these fig­ures, un­der re­view, will not in­crease.

Thames Val­ley Po­lice said: “In cir­cum­stances such as these, Po­lice and Crime Com­mis­sion­ers can ap­ply to the Home Of­fice for spe­cial grant fund­ing to meet ad­di­tional costs that would be in­curred from polic­ing un­ex­pected and ex­cep­tional events within their ar­eas.”
