Grief as search teams find storm couple’s bodies

Investigat­ion after discovery on shoreline

Craig McDonald Police searching for a missing couple feared to have been swept out to sea yesterday recovered two bodies.

Jim and Susan Kenneavy have been missing since their Ford Kuga was found badly damaged on a remote beach on Thursday morning.

They are understood to have been driving home when their car left the A716 Stranraer to Drummore road. Locals told of wild conditions and waves of up to 30ft around the time.

Investigat­ors are probing whether the couple got out their car after it left the road and were attempting to get to safety when they were swept away.

The vehicle was discovered by council workmen clearing storm damage at Kilstay Bay, just north of Drummore, Wigtownshi­re.

Dozens of coastguard­s, lifeboat crews and police had been scouring the shoreline around Luce Bay in the search.

Two bodies, understood to be Jim, 79, and Susan, 65, were recovered yesterday morning on shoreline at Port William, about 15 miles across Luce Bay.

A body believed to be Susan was found at 8.15am. The body of a man thought to be Jim was discovered an hour later.

Relatives paid tribute to the couple on Facebook. Julie Hepton wrote: “RIP Aunt Sue and Jim.”

Susan’s great-niece Siobhan Aitken added: “She will always be in our hearts.”

Drummore, Scotland’s most southerly village, is regularly battered by huge waves.

One villager said: “There’s a sea wall near where the car was found and there’s a bit missing. Whether the car went over there on to the shore I don’t know.”

A pol ice spokesman said: “Although formal identifica­tion has sti l l to take place, it is believed to be the missing couple and their next-of-kin have been informed.

“A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal. Our thoughts are with their family at this time.”
