THE BIG SHOT

It looks like an image from Hollywood blockbuster The Martian… but this is a real-life photo of Elysium Planitia, the vast lava plain near the equator of Mars. It was taken as Nasa’s InSight probe landed on the planet last week. Over the coming days, it’ll take more pictures and send them to Earth so scientists can decide where the probe should place its instruments to study the interior of Mars.
