I can’t forgive Fergie

- Fraser Wilson

Aberdeen legend Jim Leighton has revealed he hasn’t spoken to Sir Alex Ferguson in 28 years – and never will again.

The legendary keeper won an astonishing nine winners’ medals under Ferguson at Pittodrie including four league titles and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1983.

But his relationship with Ferguson broke down at Manchester United, culminating in Leighton being dropped for the 1989 FA Cup Final replay.

He said: “It got pretty frosty over the period and went to zero after the final.

“We’ve never spoken since and never will again.”

“He was miles ahead of anybody in terms of knowledge of the game and tactics. But in terms of dealing with people, it wasn’t quite the same.”

It wasn’t the first time Leighton had felt the chill from Ferguson in the aftermath of a cup final.

In May 1983, 10 days after helping Aberdeen beat Real Madrid to lift the Cup Winners’ Cup, he was part of a side that beat Rangers to win the Scottish Cup.

But Ferguson blasted his players on live TV immediately after the 1- 0 win and Leighton said: “We all lost a lot of respect for him that day considering what we had achieved.

“He apologised to us the next morning but the damage had been done.”
