Aquaman star reveals his softer side
Aquaman star Jason Momoa may be the toughest actor in Hollywood but he has revealed he was in floods of tears filming his latest blockbuster.
Momoa – all 6ft 4in and 17st of him – said: “I’m the biggest drama queen onn the set. I was constantly crying.
“I was raised by a single mother and I’m very con-connected to my emotions.” motions.”
Momoa was a young boy when he and his mumm left his native Hawaii for a neww life in Iowa.
And as DC Universe movie Aquaman heads to UK cinemas on Wednesday, the dad of two says he has no problem revealing ling his vulnerabilities.
He said: “I’m not ot going to normally ly get hired to play ay those emotional al things – and I’m m capable of it. I’m m just trapped in a big, dumb body.”
While his emotions got the better of him from time to time, the physical pain of filming Aquaman also reduced him to tears. He had to hang from cables while shooting computer-generated action scenes. Though Aquaman’s adventures are under water, the film was mostly shot with its stars “swimming” through air. Jason recalls ranting at the film crew: “I weigh 240lb, I can’t feel my nuts. “You have got too let me down. Take this damn thing off me.” The muscleman also had to endure months of strict dieting to perfect the bulging biceps, abs and thighs of tattooed Aquaman.
And his co-star Amber Heard did not make it easy, tormenting him with offers of tasty treats.
Heard, 32, who plays Mera, the Queen of Atlantis, would taunt him with offers of wine and cheese.
Momoa got his own back by tearing out the last 10 pages of a book she was reading. And they had plenty of banter when he moaned about Aquaman’s ill-fitting boots on set.
The actor said: “She’s the biggest trouper. She is very intelligent and reads and things like that. I look at pictures and see pretty things.”
The pair were previously on screen together in Justice League.
Before Aquaman, Momoa starred in Game of Thrones as warlord Khal Drogo – married to Daenerys, played by Emilia Clarke.
He was signed to star as Aquaman seven years ago and first played the role in the 2016 movie Batman v Superman.
He reprised the role in last year’s Justice League.
And with an Aquaman sequel likely, we can expect more tears on set.
But a megabucks payday will at least have him laughing all the way to the bank.
