British festive feasts go global

A probe has found UK supsupermarkets import many fesfestive favourites from aroaround the globe.
LLidl’s frozen turkeys come frofrom Canada, Poland and FraFrance, while their goose is shshipped in from Hungary.
IIceland’s turkey breast joijoint with bacon is produced in PPoland, while their frozen pigpigs in blankets are made wiwith EU pork. Their stuffed duduck is from Hungary.
Asda’s roasting beef is imported from Ireland and their gammon joint from Denmark.
Sainsbury’s Maris Piper potatoes are grown in Israel, whi le Tesco’s Lakeland goose comes from Hungary.
Ocean Spray’s cranberry sauce is made of berries grown in Canada, Chile and the US and Lidl’s beechwood smoked salmon comes from Germany.
While Morrisons’ fresh vegetables are all sourced from the UK, their frozen Brussels sprouts and carrots come from Belgium and parsnips come from France.
British campaign group The National Farmers’ Union are battling the trend.
They said : “We are encouraging shoppers to support our farmers and back British farming.
“One of the easiest ways to achieve this is buying produce displaying the Red Tractor logo, which also provides a guarantee of traceability, environmental protection, food safety and hyg iene and wel fa re standards.”
