Warriors pass French test with bonus point

- Lyon ........................ 22 Warriors .................42

Glasgow boosted their hopes of reaching the Champions Cup last eight with a stunning bonuspoint success in France.

And the swaggering Warriors will be looking for an encore when they bring Lyon back to their own patch at Scotstoun next weekend.

After watching his side climb to the top of Pool 3 on the back of a five-try blitz coach Dave Rennie warned his players the job is only half done.

He said: “Any victory in France is a good victory. And to come away with a bonus point is just the icing on the cake.

“But we still have a huge amount of work in front of us if we are to make the knockout rounds.

“We must keep up the intensity and momentum when Lyon come to Scotstoun next week. Then we will have two very tough matches against Cardiff and Saracens.

“We took our chances well but we leaked a couple of soft tries.”

Glasgow made a fast start, threatening the home defence with a series of raids. And their early efforts were rewarded when Adam Hastings landed an easy penalty after Lyon were offside.

The home side responded and drew level through Jonathan Pelissie when Adam Ashe was guilty of lineout obstruction.

But Hastings instantly restored the advantage with a 40-metre strike. Warriors began to find some rhythm and put together a patient sequence of phases to create the time and space for George Horne to send Ashe over. Hastings added the extras.

But Lyon grabbed a touchdown of their own from dangerman Toby Arnold, goaled by Pelissie.

There was drama on the halfhour mark when a ruck clear-out by Glasgow prop Oli Kebble was reviewed by the video ref.

But to the relief of Warriors the official deemed the collision not worthy of a card.

And Glasgow earned a major boost a minute before the break as George Horne pounced for their second score from close quarters.

The boot of Hastings was accurate again to open up a 10-point gap.

The away side had to soak up heavy bombardment after the restart. But another penalty from Hast ings provided fur ther breathing space.

Lyon then ch a r g ed back into the game with a try by Noa Nakaitaci after a tap-and-run penalty.

But a moment of magic got Warriors back on track. A clever chip by Pete Horne sparked Lyon confusion and in sped Stuar t Hogg to claim the first touch.

Better was to as

come Huw Jones came off the bench to snap up the bonus-point score after great work by Hastings.

Charl McLeod went over to give Lyon fresh hope. Hogg was narrowly wide with a penalty attempt from his own half but they were home and dry as Ashe completed his try double two minutes from the end.
