I was too naive to see Mick was nurturing me

Adam Hammill regrets not making a bigger impact on the Premier League. But he reckons the experience made him a better person. The St Mirren winger was signed by Wolves boss Mick McCarthy in 2011 to play in England’s top flight but featured just 19 times over two seasons in the Midlands. He blames his immaturity for not achieving more at Molineux but it was a learning curve. And after being given a suspended jail sentence and community service for a drunken assault while on loan at Huddersfield, his life changed forever.

Hammill said: “I look back at my time in the Premier League and feel I should have done better.

“I was young and naive. I’d play well in a game then not even be on the bench for the next. But I had to learn to understand that managers try to nurture players and I was just getting to grips with the Premier League.

“I’d slacken off because I felt I should have been playing. I’d do things I shouldn’t have been doing.

“But the older you get, the more you understand the game. You can’t let emotions get the better of you but I’ve been a culprit with that in the past.

“The off-field incident I was involved in changed my outlook and my life.

“No one’s perfect, everyone makes mistakes. I had to try and draw a line under it and be a better person.

“It can be emotionally tough but you have to be strong enough to deal with it.”
