Neville said: “You want the biggest and best occasions – and playing our nearest rivals at a World Cup will be special.

“I watched Scotland against USA and they were fantastic. We’ll have to be at our best and reach a level we’ve not produced before while I’ve been manager.

“Scotland have done well. You can go back to the game at the Euros but they’re a totally different outfit. They have confidence, experience and a good system.

“And their manager is fantastic. I have a lot of respect for Shelley.

“We had something like this when we played Wales in qualifying – there’s a circus around the game – but we handled that well in Newport.”
