Labour plan global solidarity for workers

- John Ferguson Political Editor

Labour plan to scrap anti-union laws that stop industrial action in solidarity with workers in other countries.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell wants employees to be able to carry out the kind of action that saw staff at a Rolls-Royce factory in East Kilbride ground half of Chile’s air force during general Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship in the 70s.

It was portrayed in the documentary Nae Pasaran, which told how workers refused to carry out repairs on engines of Hawker Hunter fighter aircraft.

McDonnell said: “That group took courageous and humane action against the horrors of Pinochet. Such acts of solidarity have been undermined by restrictive anti-union laws.”
