Violence hits city of love again
Protesters faced police in defiance yesterday as violence erupted again in the centre of Paris.
Cops used teargas and baton charges during the yellow vest demonstrators’ fifth Day of Rage.
French President Emmanuel Macron has already been forced to scrap green taxes on fuel. An estimated 1500 people chanted “Macron resign” in the capital and dozens were arrested.
Protester Philippe Berger, 34, from Brittany, said: “The establishment have let us down and need a complete change.
“Macron has to go. We won’t stop until he does.”
The marchers gathered in Paris and other cities for a fifth consecutive Saturday of demonstrations. They defied a government call to suspend the action following Tuesday’s attack on Strasbourg’s Christmas market, in which a gunman killed four people.
But fewer people turned up – 66,000 compared to 125,000 last Saturday.
The movement, which was initially against a rise in fuel taxes, now addresses other issues, including education reforms.
