Manager hails 1972 heroes

-

As she prepares to lead her team to their first Women’s World Cup next year, Scotland coach Shelley Kerr says she can never forget the 1972 side who made it all possible.

Shelley said: “Nobody really understands what they had to go through.

“I can a bit because of my age – but we can never forget the women who paved the way for where we are now.”

Her side will face Japan, England and Argentina after a glittering World Cup draw at La Seine Musicale in Paris eight days ago.

The first game is against the Auld Enemy in Nice on June 9 – and the game at the 36,000-capacity Allianz Riviera will be televised to a gloabl audience.

The vast majority of the players who will represent the Scots next summer will be fully professional – in stark contrast to their predecessors.
