Christmas tree infested with bugs

-

A grandfather has told of his horror after discovering his family Christmas tree was alive with bugs.

Author Hamish Robertson, 71, and wife Shirley, 54, bought a “treated” Nordmann fir Christmas tree from B&Q at Fort Kinnaird, Edinburgh.

Two weeks after putting it up, they spotted a couple of beetlelike insects under the tree.

Within two days, they realised the 7ft fir was infested with bugs.

Hamish, of Edinburgh, said: “We had a look at the tree and couldn’t see any on the tree itself but when we looked at the water in the base of the new tree-stand we had also just bought at B&Q, we found lots of tiny stick-like things wriggling around.”

The couple poured bleach into the water to kill off any bugs.

But the next morning they spotted more insects on the floor.

Hamish said: “We had a good look at the tree again and this time it was absolutely infested.”

The couple immediately took the bug-covered fir outside.

Hamish complained to B&Q and said a member of customer service initially told him they had received other complaints about insect-infested trees.

But he said a manager later denied they had received other complaints and told him an investigation was under way.
