Tennis legend in trans sport row
Tennis legend Martina Navrati lova has become embroiled in a row with a transgender cyclist.
The Wimbledon champ was accused of being “transphobic” when she questioned the fairness of trans atheletes competing in women’s sport.
Campaigners say biological males who identify as women should be allowed to compete against females.
But critics say male-to-female transgenders have an unfair physical advantage.
Navrati lova angered transgender Dr Rachel McKinnon when she tweeted: “Clearly that can’t be right.
“You can’t just proclaim yourself a female and be able to compete against women.
“There must be standards and having a penis and competing as a woman would not fit that standard.”
She later said she’d “keep quiet” afer getting a series of angry responses and added :“All I want is fairness.”
But Dr McKinnon, who works in the philosophy department at College of Charleston, in South Carolina, and was born male, hit back.
Th et rans cycling champion told Navratilova: “All you had to do: ‘I’m sorry. I made a mistake. I will work to do better’.
“People: genitals are irrelevant to sports performance.”
Navratilova, who won nine women’s Wimbledon titles, replied :“I regret nothing.”
