Bang on target for New Year squibfest

-

Workers were yesterday putting the finishing touches to preparations for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay fireworks spectacular.

More than three tonnes of squibs will be set off at midnight tomorrow – the culmination of two days of celebrations in the capital.

Edinburgh’s The Mac Twins – who will host this year’s Street Party – joined the preparations.

Yesterday, the Met Office said conditions across Scotland should be reasonable at Hogmanay.

A spokesman added: “It is expected to remain mild for the time of year.

“But it might be an idea to take your umbrella if you are going to any celebrations.”

Chief Superintendent Kenny Macdonald, event commander for the capital’ s Hogma nay festivities, says a strict no-fly zone will be enforced to deter drones.

Hundreds of officers will be on duty alongside event stewards and revellers can expect to see armed police.

ScotRail, who have been under fire over delays and cancellations, are putting on extra carriages on trains to and from Glasgow and Edinburgh this week.

However there will be no services on New Year’s Day.

A spokeswoman said: “We are asking customers to check ScotRail on Twitter and visit our website before travelling.”

Government body Transport Scotland say they are not expecting any road delays over the New Year.
