Sauce of celebration

Food giants Heinz are celebrating their 150th birthday, 100 years after their founder’s death.

Henr y Heinz , f rom Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, started making and selling horseradish sauce, using his mother’s recipe, in 1869.

Seven years later, Heinz Tomato Ketchup was launched in the US and it arrived in the UK in 1886.

Heinz had five children with his Ulster Scots wife and died in 1919, aged 74.
